Prime Site: Boutique Hotel Planned in Heart of Downtown, Opposite Cobo

March 04, 2013, 7:30 AM

A boutique hotel is proposed in a historic Detroit landmark on Larned at Washington Boulevard, near office towers and across the street from Cobo Center, according to Crain's.

A Southfield developer offers $1.25 million for the five-floor 1929 building that serves as Detroit Fire Department headquarters, Detroit Building Authority director Beth DunCombe tells reporter Sherri Welch. Fire administrators are moving to MGM Grand's former temporary casino

Detroit City Council members plan to consider the project Tuesday, Crain's says.

Converdsion to a hotel is expected to be finished before the January 2015 auto show, Welch writes.

The five-floor brick building at the southeast corner of Larned and Washington Boulevard has nearly 63,000 square feet, says a property listing, which notes that the site is "ideally positioned between Cobo Hall convention center and financial district, with an elevated monorail tram stop across the street and easy access to I-75, I-375 and Lodge (M-10) freeways."

No, we don't call the People Mover a "monorail tram" either, though it sounds quaint.
