No So Fast, Says Detroit Public Schools EM Roy Roberts

May 15, 2013, 11:44 AM

For those who wanted to see Roy Roberts leave sooner than later . . . well, he's not leaving so soon.

In a press release, Roberts, the governor-appointed emergency manager for Detroit Public Schools, said he plans to stay up to another six months.

Roberts announced recently that he planned to leave Thursday when his contract expires.

But the new statement says:

After careful consideration and deep discussion with my leadership team about bringing this current school year to a strong close, I have approached Gov. Rick Snyder, and he has agreed, to extend my contract as Emergency Manager for a maximum of six months.

Many of you are probably asking yourselves why I requested this contract extension. My answer is really quite simple, and is the reason I took this job in the first place – it’s about educating the children of Detroit. DPS is on a good trajectory, with improved test scores and graduation rates, a balanced budget, and a solid strategic plan, developed by all of us, that focuses on neighborhood-centered, quality schools.

I want to do everything I can to ensure that we complete this school year in keeping with this trajectory – and help begin the preparation for an even more successful 2013-14 academic and fiscal year.
