The new Detroit Police cars.

This won't be any ordinary press conference.

In fact, Mayor Dave Bing will have a little fun at this one. Bing needs to have more fun.

The city on Thursday will get its first installment of new police cars and ambulances donated by the business community. The first installment includes 15 police cars and 10 ambulances, the city said.

Bing is expected to lead a procession of the new vehicles down Woodward Avenue from Campus Martius  to Hart Plaza before he holds a press conference at the Dodge Fountain at 1:30 p.m.  He'll stand along side Roger Penske and other business people.

If it rains, the level of fun will be reduced.

A press release says in case of rain, the car and ambulance procession will be nixed and the press conference will be held at Cobo Center in Macomb Hall.

In March, Bing along with businessman Roger Penske announced that a group of businessmen led by Penske had donated $8 million to the Downtown Detroit Partnership to lease 100 police cars and 23 ambulances for the city.  The brands include Dodge Charger, Ford Taurus, and Chevrolet Caprice.

More details come Thursday on when other vehicles will arrive, says Bing's spokesman, Robert Warfield.
