Final Verdicts From Viewers: 'Low Winter Sun' Finale Gets Online Praise And Pans

October 07, 2013, 8:20 AM

Sunday night's "Low Winter Sun" double-header, which wrapped up Season One of the cable series shot in Detroit, has bloggers and other viewers chatting. Here's a sampling:

"Ended on its own terms:" The finale was rather bleak and full of despair. . . . It didn't blow my mind, but it didn't let me down either. It certainly stuck to the mood and style throughout the season. And while there weren't really characters to like or root for, by the end, we did get to know them more. . . . If the series doesn't manage to come back for a second round, at least it ended on its own terms with actual closure, true to the story it was telling." -- Sean McKenna, TV Fanatic

"Hope it gets renewed:" I have to admit I like Low Winter Sun. I truly hope it gets renewed. -- Maryann Struman of Dearborn Heights, Facebook

"I won't be back:" Some of it was worth the wait and some of it was still pointless. But like or not, I respect the show’s decision to play the long game. . . . The finale to "Low Winter Sun," and the show as a whole, was a disappointment. Occasionally brushing good TV, it was simply too concerned with planting plot devices and coming up with terrible situations that it forgot to develop memorable characters. . . . I don’t know if the show will be back for another season or not, but I know that I won’t be. -- Joey Esposito, IGN Entertainment

"Isolated teams of writers:" The tonal shifts in this series have been one of its most maddening deficiencies. Between [the last two] episodes, Frank’s demeanor changes so drastically as to suggest that the show’s been crafted by isolated teams of writers unaware of anything but the most basic outlines of the story. -- Dennis Perkins, A.V. Club

"Love seeing Detroit:" I love seeing Detroit. . . . I think the acting is good, the bad people really bad. It's a little too dark (the filming), rarely filmed on a sunny day. It also could use some comic relief at times. -- Kathleen Kolbe of Troy, Facebook

"I bailed:" I really wanted to love it. Beautifully shot. Great Detroit scenes. But I bailed after four episodes of meh. -- Joe Kurth of Detroit, Facebook

"Weighted down:" Why should we bother to invest any more time in a show that's weighed down by a heavy plot that twists itself more tightly every week and unhappy characters who take themselves too seriously? -- Carissa Pavlica, She Knows Entertainment
