Wayne County Jail Slowly Becoming A Pile Of Dust

October 17, 2013, 11:25 AM

So you know how there is this popular imagine of prisoners sitting in the yard busting up rocks? When Wayne County needs to knock down a jail, do they use jail bird to bust up the facility?

Nope.

They use contractors (preferably with political connections) and as Charlie LeDuff discovered, those contractors are already deconstructing the ill-fated, over-budget, under-sized, and never-completed Wayne County jail project.

Fox 2 Detroit: The word they gave to the public is they're securing the site for the wintertime. But that's only a half-truth. Because, in fact, they're tearing it down. Here's Bob Ficano's chief of staff, June Lee, admitting as much: "We're going to work together to come up with the best solution we can. It's not going to be perfect, it's not going to be what we first thought it was going to be, most likely, but the goal is to do the best that we can."

I ask: So that jail project's over?

Lee: This current jail project, as it currently stands, is over.

Fantastic.
