Pro Tip: Always Assume The Mic Is On (F'ing Always!)

No matter what kind of Wednesday morning you had, chances are pretty good it wasn't as awful as Lauren Podell's.

The WDIV reporter was trying to deliver a live standup from Lapeer when she had technical trouble with a capital T. It was enough to make a journalist swear . . . on the air, as it turned out.

Lauren Podell was vividly frustrated.

Podell, a former morning traffic reporter now on general assignment, was covering a fire in the small town's historic district and didn't realize she was live when rookie anchor Evrod Cassimy introduced her on-scene segment at 6:30 a.m.

"I don't know when we're going and neither does Jim," she says. "I can't get this fucking IFB in there." (That's TV talk for an interruptible foldback earpiece.)

Cassimy, who joined the station three months ago, calmly said "we apologize for that" as an audio technician cut Podell's live feed.

He and co-anchor Lauren Sanders Rhonda Walker appear stunned, but move on as if it's just another routine morning of live television.

Update, 3:30 p.m.: The web loves short cursing clips, so it's no surprise Profane Podell went national, with pickups by Gawker, Mediate, Jim Romenesko's popular journalism blog and a few others.
