One of Detroit's iconic landmarks continues to burn.

WXYZ-TV reported that another home of the Heidelberg Project  on Detroit's east side was destroyed by a suspected arson fire early Thursday morning.

WXYZ reported it was the second fire at the project in the last two weeks, and the sixth probable arson blaze this year.

Today's fire comes on the same day of the Heidelberg Project's 4th annual Fall fundraiser.

The Heidelberg Facebook page posted this:

More sad news this morning. A sixth fire was set to the Penny House on Mt. Elliot just after 3AM.

Despite quick reporting by patrol and more swift response from DFD, a lack of water pressure has made this blaze impossible to contain.

We need your help in ending this madness! PLEASE support and share our fundraising efforts for security; WE CANNOT DO THIS ALONE.

Supporters are posting angry comments on the project's Facebook page, where a post with the photo at right above has been shared about 900 times by 10:30 a.m. Thursday. These are among posts:

  • Chris Surface: This is so damned sickening. What a bunch of low life, degenerate scumbags. Looks like they won't be happy until the whole thing lies in rubble. It's beyond saddening to imagine the mindset that insists on destroying such a wonderful testament of hope and imagination in a city that desperately needs every ounce of inspiration it can get. Horrible.
  • Sandy Asuquo: "This is a tragedy!!! Let's re-direct our anger and contribute to the fundraiser to provide security for this awesome project."
  • Anna Clark: "This is terrible. Somebody is seriously trying to burn down the The Heidelberg Project, house by house. Please help support their fundraising for security! This is one of the great wonders of the city. (And one of its biggest tourist attractions, incidentally.)"
  • Cheryl Ann: "I'm heartsick over this latest act of violence to The Heidelberg Project. We're losing an irreplaceable cultural institution as the city officials sit by and watch. Kinda like Nero playing the fiddle while Rome burned. Come on people, we need to band together and save the Heidelberg Project. I know this is an expensive time of year for everyone, but dig deep, sacrifice something and let's make this happen!"
  • Dena Arellanes: "This is NOT a Detroit issue, this is a community issue. IF we want to bring in positive growth in ALL the Detroit areas -- Oakland-Macomb, are you listening?! -- we have to be responsible and provide support for all of Detroit. Too much is riding on this. . . . We need to, must, support this important part of our community, now before it's gone."
