Monica Morgan Says She Has 'No Permanent Damage' From Gun Mishap

January 12, 2014, 2:39 PM by  Alan Stamm

In her first public statement since being wounded in a Dec. 30 shooting at home, widely known photographer Monica Morgan says she's making a full recovery.

"By God's grace I continue to mend each day," she posts Sunday afternoon on her Facebook page. "No permanent damage and no major arteries or organs touched."

Her status update -- an apt phrase in this context -- is accompanied by the photo above, taken Tuesday by husband General Holiefield at McLaren Macomb Hospital in Mount Clemens. She didn't say whether she's still there.

Morgan, 50, expresses gratitude for an outpouring of concern.

On behalf of General and myself, I extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone for all of your prayers, concern, well-wishes, love, friendship, encouragement, flowers, edible fruit baskets, food, inspirational words. . . . God has heard and answered prayers.

The post attracted more than 160 comments and over 400 "likes" in two hours.

She was shot in the abdomen at the couple's Harrison Township home while Holiefield was cleaning a .45-caliber Desert Eagle semi-automatic handgun at the kitchen table, Morgan, Holiefield and another couple told police Macomb County deputies. The foursome had just returned from a shooting range the day before New Year's Eve.

Holiefield, a 61-year-old national UAW vice-president, faces a misdemeanor charge of reckless use of a firearm, news reports said Friday

The couple married in September 2012 in Venice, Italy. Morgan, a veteran freelance photojournalist, had been Rosa Parks' personal photographer and returned from Nelson Mandela's funeral two weeks before the accident.
