Like To Spray Or Brush Wall Art? Here's A Way To Earn Money Doing It

February 19, 2014, 2:33 PM

Calling all taggers urban artists: Proposals are invited for a public art project that will decorate a pair of outside walls in the Lindale Gardens area of northeast Detroit.

The design theme is love and forgiveness, say social media posts and handouts from Bleeding Heart Design, which doesn't give the wall sizes.

The selected artist or team will get $1,000 for materials and another $1,000 as a grant from the Detroit Collaborative Design Center at the University of Detroit Mercy.

A vacant shop's boarded-up front became a community bulletin board in an earlier Bleeding Heart Design project.

Entries are due by March 16. Inquiries and proposals can go to the group via its contact form or to its 2012 founder, Rebecca ("Bucky") Willis at Bucky@bleedingheartdesign.org.

Willis, a native Detroiter with a master's degree in architecture from the University of Detroit Mercy, describes her group as "an organization dedicated to spreading altruism and strengthening communities through thoughtful design and the sharing of skills and services."

Other projects supported by the U of D Mercy center include building an outdoor community stage at an abandoned lot, turning an abandoned liquor store's facade into a community bulletin board (pictured) and colorfully painting a dilapidated home.

Lindale Gardens, a neighborhood at 7 Mile and John R, is where Willis grew up. "Personal experiences and memories," are partly why it's selected for Bleeding Heart Design project, she explains at the website. Other factors include "its abandoned and unused commercial property and its potential to become a retail and business destination."
