Downtown Ping Pong Club Bounces To A Larger Home in Penobscot Building

Downtown Detroit's most popular ping pong club -- OK, its only one -- is nearly done moving to a larger space.

The year-old Drive Table Tennis Social Club, which grew early last year from a pop-up into an ongoing business at 1441 Woodward in the Merchants Row area near Grand Circus Park, plans to reopen March 29 at street level in the landmark Penobscot Building at 645 Woodward.    

Drive's first site was financed partly with $5.600 from a Kickstarter campiagn that noted: "Every table is connected to a local nonprofit, so every time you play at Drive you will financially support important causes."

More recently, owner Diallo Smith posts on his club's Facebook page:

This new 4,000 sf facility will feature an incredible cafe area with lunch and dinner menu, bar and sports flooring for our table tennis courts.

We are 'moving on up.' . . . We're super-excited and hope you are super-excited with us. . . .

Also opening nearby this month on the same lobby level is a second location of Athens Souvlaki Greek restaurant, according to Crain's
