Arrests Begin In Widely Condemned Detroit Attack on Driver Steve Utash

April 05, 2014, 2:12 PM

Community groups helped identify the first two suspects arrested in the vicious attack on Steve Utash, a driver who stopped after hitting a youngster, Detroit police say.

A 16-year-old and 17-year-old were picked up Saturday near the site of Wednesday's east-side violence, Sgt. Michael Woody tells the media. Eric D. Lawrence of the Free Press has details:

Woody confirmed that the teens, who are from Detroit, were part of the group that beat Steve Utash. . . . Utash was attacked after his pickup hit 10-year-old David Harris and he stopped to check on the boy.

Woody called on the others involved, believed to be 10-12 people, to turn themselves in.

In a Detroit News report, Lauren Abdel-Razzq paraphrases the sergeant as saying neighborhood organizations are relaying tips and helping investigators contact residents. Police believe about 10 others were involved.

"It’s only a matter of time before we get them all into custody,” he said. “They might as well turn themselves in peacefully.

“This isn’t the end of it. It’s the beginning of it all.”

Utash remains in a coma at St. John Hospital. His children's online fund drive to help with medical expenses has drawn more than $76,700 in two days from nearly 1,800 donors.
