Deadline Detroit Launches Fundraising Drive As It Reorganizes

April 10, 2014, 5:39 AM

In an effort to continue operating while it reorganizes and talks to investors, Deadline Detroit has launched a fundraising drive.

Readers can contribute by either giving a one-time donation or paying a voluntary monthly subscription of $10, $20, $30 or $40.

Last month, Deadline Detroit reported lagging revenues would force it to lay off employees and stop all salaries as of April 4. The financial problems arose despite building a large audience in less than two years of operation.

“We’ve gotten great support from readers and want to keep this local voice alive,” co-founder Allan Lengel said in a statement. “We need community support at this time.”

Founded in April 2012 with an investment from Compuware Ventures, Deadline Detroit publishes seven days a week, aggregating the most interesting coverage of metro Detroit from anywhere on the Internet and publishing stories and commentary by its own staffers and freelancers.

In the first 10 weeks of 2014, Deadline Detroit’s audience grew 275 percent over the same period last year. It has attracted more than 330,000 unique visitors a month and nearly 30,000 Facebook fans. In its recent Best of Detroit issue, Real Detroit Weekly called Deadline Detroit the metro area’s best local news website.
