Fox 2 News Headlines

Charlie LeDuff, Fox 2's popular reporter, roams the country these days, searching for stories that say something about "The Americans," the name of his new experiment in journalistic story-telling.

He found one on Morang Avenue -- Deborah Hughes, the retired nurse who, gun in pocket, intervened in the beating a week ago of Clinton Township tree trimmer Steven Utash.

As many as 10 to 12 people are believed to have participated in the assault, while dozens of others stood by and watched - saying nothing, doing nothing.

Except one.

Hughes lives across the street. She may have saved the life of Utash, breaking up the east-side mob attackjing him. Detroit Police Chief James Craig knocked on the woman's door and personally called her a "Detroit hero."

"What would have happened if she had not responded?" the chief wondered on camera.

LeDuff also interviewed Dontae Hutson, a young man who lives in the east side neighborhood. He asked what motivated the attackers.

"It was basically rage," Hutson said. "It was all rage."
