Jewish Facilities in Metro Detroit Tighten Security After Kansas City Area Shootings

April 14, 2014, 11:51 PM

The triple homicide in the Kansas City area Sunday involving a raging anti-Semite has triggered concerns around the country at Jewish facilities including in Metro Detroit.

Metro Detroit is home to two Jewish Community Centers, one in West Bloomfield and the other in Oak Park. Both campuses host apartments for seniors.

Residents of Meer Apartments, a Jewish senior living facility at the Jewish Community Center complex in West Bloomfield, were among those who received a letter on Monday telling them of the heightened concern about the shootings.

The letter to residents read:

Dear Residents and Family Members,

As you may be aware, there was a shooting incident in Kansas City on Sunday at both the JCC and Village Shalom, an assisted living facility. Although the story is still unfolding, our thoughts are with those impacted in Kansas City.

We, at Jewish Senior Life are following the direction of our security team at Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit regarding maintaining the security at our communities. We have already placed additional security details on each of our campuses at this time. We will continue to follow the direction of the Federation and the local police department.

We are following this developing news closely and await any further direction we may be advised to take in order to maintain our security.

Our thoughts are with all those impacted in Kansas City.

Frazier Glenn Cross, 73,  a white-supremacist with links to the Ku Klux Klan was arrested for those shootings in the Kansas City area.  -- A.L.
