The Father of Aiyana Stanley-Jones Gets 40-60 Years In Death Of Teen

April 18, 2014, 12:57 PM

Charles Jones, the father of Aiyana Stanley-Jones, the 7-year-old who was shot to death by Detroit police in a 2010 raid, was sentenced Friday to 40 to 60 years for his role in the shooting death of a Detroit teen, Orlander Brand-Williams reports in the Detroit News.

Jones also received 10-20 years for perjury in the case for lying during a grand jury hearing.

Jones’ defense attorney, Leon Weiss, said he plans to file a motion in two weeks asking for a new trial for Jones.

Before he was sentenced Friday, Jones told the family of the victim, Je’Rean Blake, he did not provide the gun that ended the teen’s life. The jury aquitted him of weapons charges, which his attorney said is grounds for an appeal for a new trial.

“I’m terribly sorry for your loss, but Je’Rean’s murder has nothing to do with me,” Jones said. “If my being convicted brings you any relief then so be it.”

Jones was found guilty of second-degree murder and perjury by a Wayne County Circuit Court jury in February after four days of deliberation. Jones was one of two men charged in the May 2010 shooting death of the 17-year-old.
