Not so long ago in every sports publication, it was Justin Verlander this, and Justin Verlander that.

Now, its Max Scherzer's time to shine in the limelight.

Scherzer graces the latest cover of Sports Illustrated with the headline: "Mad Max's $144 Million Bet."

The cover goes on to say:

Max Scherzer Has a Cy Young Arm and a Beautfiul Mind to Match, But Did He Make a Dumb Wager on His Future?

Albert Chen writes the profile on Scherzer, 30.

Sports Illustrated summarizes the piece by writing that Scherzer  "developed from a potential middle-of-the-rotation starter into one of baseball’s best, thanks in large part to the emergence of a curveball that’s helped him rip through opposing lineups. Scherzer talks his pitching philosophy, his usage of advanced statistics, and what he’s learned from other pitchers around the league. Finally, Chen attempts to answer the question as to whether or not Scherzer’s gamble will pay off, or whether he’s taken a bad bet on himself."
