After a second review, Rep. John Conyers still seems to be in bad shape.

The Detroit Free Press reports that Wayne County Clerk Cathy Garrett declared that Conyers only had 592 legit signatures to get on the ballot for re-election, shy of the 1,000 needed.

Garrett will make a final determination on his status on Tuesday,Kathleen Gray and Todd Spangler report.

Conyers may have to go the route of Mike Duggan and try a write-in campaign.

But his campaign folks are still optimistic that he'll make the ballot.

“We remain optimistic that at the end of the day, there will be more than a sufficient number of signatures accepted, and that Congressman Conyers will appear on the ballot in August,” he said in a statement released Friday. “There are a number of strong arguments establishing this position - supported by fact, law and precedent - that we will put forth before the appropriate authorities.”

The Freep reports that the clerk's office found that only five of eight petition circulators were properly registered as voters as required by law.
