It's certainly not the biggest mass transit plan in the country.

But for Detroit, it's a big deal even if it's only a little 3.3 mile stretch of Woodward Avenue from downtown to Midtown.

Perhaps a baby step, but a step in the right direction as to offering real public transportation beyond a bus system that is not always so reliable or easy to navigate from point A to point B to point C.

The Detroit News reports that officials on Friday announced that construction work will begin July 28 on the city’s long-awaited M-1 streetcar line.

That's the good news.

Now, a little pain that comes with growth.

Construction will close Woodward from Adams to Campus Martius Park for four months, The News reports.

“Over the next 30 days, our team will be pounding the pavement to make everyone who lives, works and visits the Woodward corridor aware of what they should expect from track construction and how to navigate around it once we begin on July 28th,” said Paul Childs, chief operating officer of M-1 Rail.
