NBC News On Gov. Rick Snyder: 'Potentially Vulnerable' Nov. 4

July 03, 2014, 7:00 AM

is it possible Gov. Rick Snyder is vulnerable in this year's election?

That's what  NBC's Chuck Todd, Mark Murray and Carrie Dann write on the network's website in an article entitled "The 10 Most Overlooked Races of 2014."

The network writes:

Michigan Governor: Democrats have had their sights on defeating the GOP governors who rode the Tea Party’s coattails in 2010 -- Pennsylvania’s Tom Corbett, Maine’s Paul LePage, and Wisconsin’s Scott Walker. But the GOP governor who wasn’t necessarily Tea Party four years ago, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (a.k.a. “One Tough Nerd” who won his PRIMARY in 2010 thanks in part to Dems and indies) is potentially vulnerable. He faces off against Democrat Mark Schauer in the fall.

WDIV's Mara MacDonald reports that while Snyder rode into office in 2010 with nearly 60 percent of the vote, Public Policy Polling, a national Democratic poll, has Snyder and Schauer in a dead heat, 40 to 40, with 20 percent undecided.

In 2010, Snyder appealed to Democrats and Independents. His backing of legislative issues like right-to-work could hurt him with that slice of the electorate.

Political consultant Dennis Darnoi is skeptical of the 40-40 poll.

"First of all, PPP has a long history of faulty poll numbers and then when you look at the sampling, it oversamples Democrats for what this election year will hold.

He goes on to tell WDIV that while Snyder's numbers aren't as good as in 2010, Schauer is still not a real threat.

Some political observers say that Schauer has yet to gain traction and is  not well-known.

MacDonald also points out that a WDIV poll in May had Snyder leading Schauer 45 to 35 percent, with 18 percent of voters undecided.
