MSNBC notes that Gov. Rick Snyder has transformed the economic landscape in Michigan by installing a number of emergency managers to run cities and school boards, most notably Detroit.

But his Democratic challenger in this November's election, ex-Congressman Mark Schauer,  promises to undo the EM system if elected.

Ned Resnikoff of MSNBC reports that Schauer, speaking at the gathering of politically progressive people at Netroots Nation in Detroit on Saturday, said that he planned on “restoring democracy” in Detroit and intended to do away with the EM law entirely.

“Look, it provides unlimited power to an un-elected official,” he said. “It sets aside elected officials, collective bargaining agreements, with accountability to only one person, and that’s the governor.”

The promise to restore democracy in Detroit may be an easy proposition. If all goes as planned, Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr should be gone by January when Schauer, if elected, would take office. -- Allan Lengel
