The headquarters of a federally funded, $148 million high-tech advanced manufacturing research institute -- which initially considered moving to Canton -- will open its doors in Corktown this fall, the city of Detroit announced.

The city, in a press release, touted the move to Detroit as a big win. The institute is slated to move into a 99,000-square-foot building at 1400 Rosa Parks Blvd.

“To win a competitive process for a project of national significance is a major win for the city,” said Mayor Mike Duggan, who added, “Detroiters should expect to see us win a lot more in the future.”

The American Lightweight Materials Manufacturing Innovation Institute (ALMMII) is a public-private partnership led by Ohio-based manufacturing technology nonprofit EWI, the University of Michigan, and Ohio State University. The initiative is part of the National Network of Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI) and is being led by the Department of Defense.

The mission is to establish a regional manufacturing ecosystem to move cutting-edge lightweight metals out of the research lab and into tomorrow’s cars, trucks, airplanes and ships for both the commercial and military sectors, a press said.

Duggan said luring the new high-tech hub in Detroit is proof that the city can compete for and win major manufacturing investments.

Citing real estate sources, Kirk Pinho of Crain's Detroit Business reports that a month ago the Duggan administration had been lobbying the institute to come to Detroit after learning that the Canton site fell through.
