Meteorologist Dave Rexroth, who lost his left eye in July 4 fireworks accident, returned to the WXYZ studios in Southfield on Tuesday for the first time since the Iowa injury.

With his wife Deb by his side, he got a a standing ovation from co-workers.

"I just wanted to let you know that I'm still normal, whatever that is," he says in the video below, posted by WXYZ.

"Your body has to heal and your spirit has to heal," he said. He meets with a counselor to talk things through.

The world looks differently now, literally. "Everything is flat for me," he explains. "The biggest difference for me is I don't have depth perception. So when I reach out to shake your hand I might miss."

The video shows him entering the station wrapped in bubble wrap, explaining that his wife's friend gave him that so he wouldn't hurt himself anymore.

"My tear ducts still work which is nice," said an emotional Rexroth.

He'll return to Iowa for prosthetic eye surgery and plans to resume work in September.
