Richard Bernstein of the well-known Sam Bernstein Law Firm announced Wednesday that he's running for Michigan Supreme Court.

The move had long been anticipated. In May, he told Deadline Detroit: "It's being considered, but no decision has been made."

A news release says he's running to “to ensure that the voices of all Michigan residents are heard and that fairness for all is a guiding principle for the Court.”

In a video posted on Facebook, Bernstein says: "I want to bring blind justice to the Michigan Supreme Court."

Bernstein, who is blind, heads his law firm's Public Services Division, which advocates for the special needs population. The division does all the work pro bono.

Bernstein was elected to the Wayne State University Board of Governors for one eight-year term, including two years as vice chair and two more as chair. In 2010, he decided not to run for a second term.

He's often seen in commercials for his family's law firm.

He has also been the subject of many stories in the New York and Detroit media after a bicyclist crashed into him while he was walking in Central Park in the summer of 2012. He broke his hip and pelvis and suffered other injuries. He sued to make the park more accessible for handicap people. He is currently locked in a federal court battle with the city of New York.

Reaction to his decision triggers encouraging remarks on his Facebook page

  • Curtis Hertel Jr.: Michigan needs a Supreme Court that puts the people and justice first! That is why I am proud to support Richard Bernstein for Michigan's Supreme Court!
  • Stacey Dogonski: Richard Bernstein has put his hat in the ring for Michigan Supreme Court! This is excellent, excellent news for the citizens of this state. I support him 100%

  • Kari Alterman: Run, Ricky, Run!! Best news of the day -- you seeking a Supreme Court seat. I've been awed by you since we were kids, and still am. Keep it up!.
