Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputy Greg Marohn resigned in 2020 following an internal investigation which found that he illegally bought prescription narcotics in uniform and spewed racial slurs that were recorded on his patrol car's dash camera,  WXYZ reports

In 2022, the Holly Police Department hired him, though he ended up resigning from there as well after some troublesome behavior surfaced, WXYZ's Ross Jones reports in a story that illustrates how police departments too often hire officers with troubled pasts.

Marohn's troubles began on the morning of Dec. 4, 2020, when he was driving in his Oakland County Sheriff’s patrol car. Because he was driving more than 90 mph, his dash camera automatically kicked in and began recording. Jones notes it's not clear he knew it was on.

While driving, he was verbally giving text commands to his phone arranging to illegally buy prescription narcotics. He also saw a Black woman walking her dog while driving and started talking aloud in his car about her, using racial slurs including the n-word.

After discovering the video, an internal investigation determined he had illegally bought drugs at least 10 times while in uniform. And then there was the matter of the racial slurs. The department noted that he "resigned in lieu of termination" on Dec. 9, 2020.

In March 2022, he was hired by the Holly Police Department without fully understanding why he left his sheriff's job.

Jones reports:

Last July 4th, records show, Marohn arrived for work and appeared unwell. He had “extreme difficulties” using his police radio, according to an investigation, repeatedly dropped his cell phone and—when he got behind the wheel—couldn’t drive faster than 10 mph.

He had a prescription for the drugs but didn't disclose that to the department. He resigned.
