Tribute for Grammy Winner Allee Willis Is Sunday at Eastern Market

February 07, 2020, 2:05 PM

Empty Bowls Detroit and international recording artist Apropos host a tribute to award-winning songwriter Allee Willis at Eastern Market Shed 5 on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Proceeds from the event -- there's a $20 donation -- go to the food program at Cass Community Social Services in Detroit.

Willis, a Detroit native who died Christmas Eve at 72, was a Grammy winner and member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Among hits she wrote are including Earth, Wind & Fire’s "September" and the "Friends" theme “I’ll Be There For You."

Allee Willis and Apropos

Apropos, who was born in Baltimore and raised in Detroit, developed a bond with Willis in 2019. The two were collaborating on a pair of songs at her ‘Willis Wonderland’ studio in California at the time of her passing.

Sunday's event includes food, entertainment and an Empty Bowls Detroit bowl painting workshop.

“You can’t be an artist from Detroit and not give back,” says Apropos.

Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door.
