Every month since launching our Deadline Detroit membership program we've awarded prizes, which include gift cards to restaurants and Starbucks and tickets to the Pistons and Red Wings.

Obviously, the world has changed.

So, instead of giving out prizes this month, Deadline Detroit's staff has put together $300 from their pockets to buy lunch Friday for 20 Detroit Fire Department workers at the Apparatus Division in Eastern Market. The division includes firefighters, EMTs and mechanics, essential workers who show up every day.

The Peterboro, an Asian-themed restaurant in Midtown that offers carryout service, is serving up 20 meals. There are so many worthy places to give, it's hard to know where to start.

So, we thought we'd start here, with the fire department.

We're grateful for all the essential workers, from the first responders to health care workers to grocery store employees and delivery people.

We're also grateful for our readers and those who have joined our membership program to help fund the journalism we do. For $3 a month, you help us deliver the news daily at a critical time like this.
