Trust betrayed: Grosse Pointe parent accused of stealing from school accounts

Embezzlement is always an inside job, by definition. Sometimes the suspect is a trusted community volunteer, not a greedy employee.

That type of case unfolds in Grosse Pointe, where a treasurer is charged with stealing over $91,000 from an elementary school parent-teacher group and more than $1,000 from a millage renewal campaign fund. The Detroit News lays it out:

Quinn Keith Smith, 43, of Grosse Pointe Woods, was charged Monday by Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy with taking money from the Monteith Parent Teacher Organization in the school district.

Smith was the treasurer of the PTO between July 2017 and January.  A financial audit found unauthorized activity on the account, prosecutors said.

While handling finances for the Grosse Pointe Public School System Millage Committee for Renewal from October 2019 and January, authorities add, Smith took more than $1,000 in donations. He'll be arraigned Wednesday in Grosse Pointe Woods Municipal Court.
