Duggan Urges Detroit Salon Workers to Get Free Covid Test by Monday

June 11, 2020, 3:07 PM by  Allan Lengel

Mayor Mike Duggan is urging Detroit hair and nail salon workers to take a free rapid Covid test through the city health department before starting work Monday.

"These (jobs) constitute the highest risk of spreading because you are in very close contact, poentitally sharing air space with your clients," Duggan said at a Thursday press conference.

After making that statement, a nurse gave Duggan the test to show how simple it is. It takes up to10 minutes for results. He tested negative.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer gave the green light last week for all barbers and hair and nail salons in the state to open this Monday.

Tests will be offered at 100 Mack Ave. on Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. An appointment is necessary and can be made at (313) 251-4488.

The city will offer retests every two weeks.

Dr. Denise Fair, head of the city health department, said at the briefing that salons should practice distancing and serve clients solely by appointment. She also suggested closing waiting rooms.
