November 22, 2020, 7:36 AM

Donutville USA on Ford Road in Dearborn has started a GoFundMe page to help cover the cost of a fine for continuing dine-in service in violaton of Michigan's Covid restrictions, the Detroit Free Press reports.

The family said fines and attorney fees may exceed $10,000.

"In my 35 years of working in this business I never dreamt that I would be criminalized for serving customers a cup of coffee and a donut in America," co-owner Mark Porada said on Facebook.

The GoFundMe page, which exceeded its $3,000 goal Sunday afternoon, says:

This fundraiser is to help cover the legal fees of Donutville USA, a 54 year old family business, who were fined with a criminal misdemeanor for allowing a customer to sit down while waiting for their spouse to use the restroom. They have decided to fight the ticket and have hired David Kallman, the attorney for Karl the Barber. The fine and attorneys fees may reach upwards of $10,000.
