Wayne County has to delay about 1,400 shots scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday because of a depleted supply of Covid vaccines received from the state, the county said Sunday.

Most people affected are healthcare workers, first responders and essential workers awaiting a first dose.

“We ran out of Pfizer vaccine on Saturday afternoon,” said Dr. Mouhanad Hammami, chief medical strategist for Wayne. “We know this is frustrating and we apologize for the inconvenience.

"Our team is working hard to vaccinate as many residents as we can but the supply shortage from the state of Michigan remains a challenge.”

The agency plans to notify each person with appointments on those days.  Rescheduled vaccinations will be given at Schoolcraft College’s Vista Tech Center, 18600 Haggerty Rd. in Livonia.

Those already scheduled for their second dose, or those who will be vaccinated at a local hospital, nursing home, or long-term-care facility, are not affected.

Wayne County and enrolled providers, such as six hospitals, Walgreens and CVS, gave 37,296 shots through Friday, stat data shows. That was 9.2% of all 406,000 vaccinations statewide before this weekend, including some second doses.

The state now plans to supply the county health division with the Moderna vaccine for new first doses. The county expects them on Tuesday.

Seniors 65 or older should schedule a vaccine through their health system, not the county health department, the county said. K-through-12 teachers will receive vaccinations through their districts in partnership with Wayne RESA (Regional Educational Service Agency).
