It's hard to believe anyone could fall for this. But Troy police say a resident got swindled out of $140,000 in a classic scam a few weeks ago.

Police were notified on Dec. 22 about the scam, according to Stephen Frye The Oakland Press.

The victim received a call from a man calling himself Roger Miller, who said he was from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The caller said he had an arrest warrant for the Troy resident "due to a package being sent to Texas from Columbia that was in his name and contained drugs and money."

A second person, "Mark Hamilton" from the Troy Police Department, joined the conversation and warned the victim "not to go near the police station."

"He was instructed to empty his bank accounts and wire the funds to two “government accounts” which he did," police said. So, he wired more than $72,000 to a bank in Hong Kong and another $45,000 to a bank in Thailand, the publication reports.

He then called a phone number and provided numbers for $20,000 in gift card numbers from Target and Best Buy.
