Plenty of folks feel Congressman Fred Upton of Kalamazoo did the right thing by voting with nine other Republican House members to impeach President Donald Trump.

But the Allegan County Republican Party, in the soutwest part of the state, found Upton's vote offensive, censured him and "condemned" his vote. The local party's executive committee approved a resolution, saying there was "little debate" and lack of due process in the impeachment process, Melissa Nann Burke of The Detroit News reports.

"We believe Congressman Upton's vote is a betrayal of his oath of office and the core values of the Allegan County Republican Party," the committee stated in the censure resolution.

"We believe this vote ignored the voice of the voters in Allegan County and was against their interest."

Censure is symbolic gesture with no real consequences, though it could be raised as an election year issue in 2022 if Upton seeks a 19th term.

In response, Upton says in a statement;

"Congress should not tolerate any effort to impede the peaceful transfer of power. I’ve gone to bat for southwest Michigan everyday I’ve been in Congress, bringing jobs, economic growth and opportunities to our region of the state. And that is exactly what I’m going to keep doing."

Upton, first elected in 1986, is the longest-serving member of Michigan's 14-person congressional delegation. He's vice chair of a four-year-old bipartisan House group calling itself the Problem Solvers Caucus – 28 Republicans and 28 Democrats who try to find common ground on key issues.
