The city of Detroit will produce some investigative records sought by the Detroit Free Press as part of a settlement agreement ending the paper's suit over exhorbitant costs and time assessed for documents related to the Make Your Date scandal of 2019.
The city billed the paper more than $222,000 for documents related to the Detroit Office of the Inspector General's investigation that found Mayor Mike Duggan gave preferential treatment to the prenatal organization, run by a woman with whom he reportedly was having an affair. The paper's request included emails from the personal accounts of Duggan and former chief of staff Alexis Wiley, who admitted to using the accounts for city business during the investigation.
Those messages and other documents the city deemed "not pertinent" will not be released under the deal, the Freep says. The city will, however, provide some records that Inspector General Ellen Ha collected during her investigation free of charge.
The city of Detroit initially said it would take three years to release all the documents sought, which totalled 400,000 pages.
