Metro Detroit high school coach fired over racial slur

March 03, 2021, 10:31 AM

A high school coach in Rochester has been fired for directing a racial slur at a student athlete. It's the third racial episode in the district to garner headlines in the past several years.

Rochester Community Schools announced the coach's "immediate termination" following an investigation in an email to parents Monday night, the Free Press reports. The email did not provide further details about the offense, including the coach's name and school.

The district drew criticism for racial insensitivity in 2018, when elementary school teacher made an inappropriate joke about slavery during a lesson and had kids lie on the floor alongside one another to simulate the conditions on slave ships. In 2017, a middle school in the district made news after a student said the N-word and made a racist joke.
