Steven Yeun, Who Grew Up in Metro Detroit, Gets Oscar Nomination

Steven Yeun, who grew up in Taylor and Troy before moving to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career, is up for an Oscar.

Academy Award nominees were announced Monday morning.

Yeun is up for best actor for his lead role in "Minari," a drama Rotten Tomatoes describes as an "intimate and heart-wrenching portrait of family and assimilation in 1980s America." The film (see trailer below) gets a 98-percent rating on that site from reviewers.

The other contenders in his categroy are Riz Ahmed (The Sound of Metal"), Chadwick Boseman ("Ma Rainey's Black Bottom"), Anthony Hopkins ("The Father") and Gary Oldman ("Mank"). 

Yeun, 37, was born in Seoul, South Korea and went to elementary school in Taylor and graduated from Troy High School in 2001, his Wikipedia page says. He  graduated from Kalamazoo College with a degree in psychology with a concentration in neuroscience in 2005. His parents owned beauty supply stores in Detroit.

He's best known for his role as Glenn Rhee in theTV series "The Walking Dead."
