Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald has been making changes since taking office in January. Some examples: She's created a human trafficking unit. And she's reviewed more than 20 "juvenile lifers" cases in which teens were sentenced to life without parole for murder.
The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that the juvenile lifer cases amount to cruel and unusual punishment. It has directed prosecutors to, at minimum, review the cases for possible re-sentencing when appropriate. Many Michigan prosecutors have dragged their feet in addressing the issue.
