Celebrity singer-songwriter and adventurer Mike Posner is setting his sights on Mt. Everest following his 2019 walk across the continental U.S., and using the climb to raise money for a local cause.

Inspired by his late father, a longtime criminal defense attorney in Detroit, the Southfield native is dedicating the climb to the Detroit Justice Center with the hopes of securing the group $250,000 in online donations. The non-profit law firm, advocacy, and research organization was founded in 2017 with the goal of transforming the criminal justice system and creating equitable economic opportunities for marginalized communities.

"While my walk was about me finding myself, I want my climb to be about others," Posner says in a video that accompanies the GoFundMe. "They're doing justice-reform work in my city that would make my dad beam with joy."

As of Tuesday afternoon, the campaign had raised more than $12,000 from 158 donors in one day.

Posner says he's training for the climb with a coach. He famously completed his walk across the U.S. even after he was hospitalized by a rattlesnake bite.
