The Bob Bashara case was sensational. The Grosse Pointe Park businessman, husband and father, who had a secret life that involved bondage, discipline and sadomasochism (BDSM)  in a basement dungeon, was charged with hiring a handyman to kill his wife Jane Bashara in January 2012.

Bashara, a former president of the Grosse Pointe Rotary Club, was known as "Master Bob" in local BDSM circles.

In late 2014, Wayne County Circuit Court jurors convicted him in the murder and he was sentenced to life in prison without parole. He was at the state prison in Whitmore Lake until he died last August at 62. The Department of Corrections did not disclose the cause of death.

"Dateline NBC" will feature the Bashara story Friday at 9 p.m. The show includes an interview with co-lead investigator, Grosse Pointe Park Police Detective Mike Narduzzi, and then-Judge Vonda Evans, who presided over the trial.

"You were a product of privilege ... (your mother) loved you," Evans said at sentencing. "But she did not know how to train you to be a man. There were no boundaries, no expectations. You were not allowed to fail, and failure teaches us more about life than all the successes combined."
