The Canadian border, including Detroit and Windsor, has been closed for more than a year now except for essential travel that includes medical workers and commercial trucks. As Covid raged in the U.S., Canadians seemed to fare better.

But Ontario, which includes Windsor and Toronto, has seen a disturbing spike in Covid.

In fact, on Sunday Ontario reported 4,456 new Covid cases -- a new single-day high, the Canadian Press reports.  The province recorded 21 new deaths.

Last Thursday, for the third time since the start of the pandemic, Ontario imposed a state of emergency. Nonessential stores can serve customers only through delivery or outdoor pickup.,  Bloomberg News reports. Hair and nail salons are shut.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has extended the year-plus ban on nonessential travel between the United States and Canada through April 21, and could lengthen it again.

Ontario has about 14 million people, four million more than Michigan.

On Saturday, Michigan reported 6,982 new cases and 74 deaths.
