If loose and unbooked is how you roll, coronavirus vaccinations can be an impulse move in Detroit.
The city health department still takes appointments for the free protection, and today begins serving walk-in patients weekdays at TCF Center, three community centers and smaller clinics -- including three Saturday locations in churches. Anyone over 16 is eligible.
"We are going to be the city that has the most open access than any place in America," says Mayor Mike Duggan. "That's the goal."
Access is eased as vaccine supply starts to exceed demand, the mayor adds. Younger people "have not been as inclined to call up and schedule an appointment," Michigan Radio quotes him as saying.
"But it's important to hold down the spread in this community. So all I can do is make it as accessible as possible. ...
"And so we are going to now start to shift. If people have made a decision not to get a vaccine, that’s one choice. But I want to make sure in the city of Detroit, every single person who wants a vaccine has access."
Similarly, Wayne County this week began encouraging walk-in visits at four locations.
