July 13, 2021, 6:06 AM

This is updated from a June 23 post.

Reservations are closed for a free Covid remembrance concert this evening on Belle Isle.

The three and a half-hour riverside event, organized by Wayne County commissioners, is a tribute to Metro Detroiters lost to Covid-19 and to frontline workers providing medical care and support, emergency services, education, transportation and retail sales.

Performers include LaShell Renee Griffin, winner of a "Pop Star Challenge" hosted by Oprah Winfrey in 2004, the Gwen Fox Trio and Notorious. The emcee is mayoral communications director Vickie Thomas, who retired as a WWJ reporter in April.

The show will be at Sunset Point on the island's west end, with guests encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets.

"This is a perfect opportunity to relax, say thanks and remember our loved ones," says Monique Baker McCormick, a county commissioner from Northwest Detroit.

Since March 2020, at least 2,447 Detroiters died from Covid, according to the state health department latest updated Friday.
