The sound of screeching tires and the scent of burning rubber were in the air Friday night.
So was a Michigan State Police helicopter hovering just 620 feet above drivers spinning in Dodge Chargers and other cars on West Grand River Avenue near I-94, shown in two videos below.
"Troopers were assisting Detroit police officers in a crackdown on illegal racing," WDIV posts.
The video captures cars doing donuts. When police arrive on the scene, the driver takes off, striking a patrol vehicle as [he] tries to get away.
The helicopter followed the vehicle onto I-96, where it ran out of gas near Grand River Avenue. Three people inside fled on foot, but police were able to apprehend the driver and one of the passengers. The third person is still on the loose.
