Robert Blackburn, an innovative printmaker and influential teacher, made his mark in the art world.

The son of Jamaican immigrants, he was raised in Harlem. He explored avant-garde ideas while promoting a new collaborative approach to printmaking, according to the Detroit Institute of Arts. He passed in 2003 at age 82.

A DIA exhibit of the artist's work, "Robert Blackburn and Modern American Printmaking," runs through Sept. 5. More than 75 works include lithographs, woodcuts, intaglio prints and watercolors by Blackburn and collaborators.

Deadline Detroit photojournalist Michael Lucido went to the exhibit the other day and talked with Clare Rogan, curator of prints and drawings.

The exhibit is sponsored by the Smithsonian, Henry Luce Foundation and the  DTE Foundation.
