Beaches are synonymous with summer. Apparently, so is bacteria.
To date, 10 beaches in Michigan are closed or under contamination advisories because of bacteria levels, according to a list from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. Four affected beaches are in Oakland County and one is in Macomb.
Michigan has 1233 public beaches and 572 private ones.
Oakland
Handsome Lake, Crossroads for Youth – Closed since July 7 due to high bacteria levels from wildlife.
Pontiac Lake, Pontiac Recreation Area – Closed since July 21 due to high bacteria levels due to wildlife.
Crooked Lake, Independence Oaks County Park – Closed since July 27 due to high bacteria levels from runoff.
Kent Lake, Kensington – Maple Beach – Closed since Aug. 4 due to high bacteria levels from an unknown source.
Macomb
Lake St. Clair, St. Clair Shores Memorial Park Beach – Contaminatrion advisory since Aug. 3 due to high bacteria levels from an unknown source.
Genessee
Lake Callis, Lake Callis beach – Closed since July 28 due to high bacteria levels from an unknown source.
Midland
Wixom Lake, Wixom Waters – Closed since July 15 due to elevated E.Coli levels and construction activities near dam.
Isabella
Lake Isabella, Essex Road beach – Contamination advisory since July 29 due to high bacteria levels from an unknown source.
Benzie
Crystal Lake, Beulah Beach – Contamination advisory since Aug. 5 due to high bacteria levels from an unknown source.
Wexford
Lake Cadillac, Kenwood Park -- Closed since Aug. 4 due to high bacteria levels from wildlife.
