Wayne County Joins Oakland

The Wayne County Public Health Department Friday joined neighboring Oakland County in mandating masks for students, faculty and staff for pre-kindergarten and K-12 schools, regardless of vaccine status.

The order brings to seven the number of Michigan counties requiring masks for students and staff this school year. The others are Genessee, Kalamazoo, Allegan, Kent and Ottawa.

"Studies of Covid-19 cases in school districts during the 2020-2021 school year demonstrated that proper masking along with other Covid-19 mitigation strategies were extremely effective to prevent secondary transmission in the school environment," the new Wayne order says.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, despite a school mask recommendation from the Center for Disease Control, has opted to let counties and school districts determine local policy.

Nearly 2,000 Daily Cases

Michigan reports a daily average of 1,979 new daily Covid cases Thursday and Friday, and 69 deaths during the two- day stretch.

The daily case average is down from 2,163 in a mid-week report, when 28 deaths were recorded for Tuesday and Wednesday.
