An off-duty Wayne County Sheriff's corrections officer was fatally shot Monday morning near I-75, the department said.

Devante Jones, 23, was dropping someone off near East Forest and the Chrysler Service Drive when he came under fire. He exited the vehicle to escape and was taken to the hospital where he died around 4:50 a.m.

Jones had worked for the department since 2019 in Jail Division 1. He has a child and another on the way in November, the department said.

"We offer our condolences and prayers to the family who have lost their loved one in the most tragic way," Sheriff Raphael Washington said in a statement. "This resonates with all of us on the job. We’re going to do all we can find out what happened."

The Detroit Police Department's homicide unit is investigating the matter.
