Authorities are investigating what caused a fire on the west side of the Lafayette Towers apartments Wednesday, forcing the building's evacuation and leaving a portion of it charred with windows shattered.

Crews worked in the rain to put out the two-alarm blaze in the historic neighborhood just east of Greekdown, TV outlets on the scene reported. There was significant damage to the 9th floor, where the fire began, an official told WWJ 950.
