A federal judge has given serious prison time to three Detroiters convicted of carjacking a Lyft driver in 2019 in Detroit.
U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds on Tuesday sentenced Jesse Evans, 21, to 9.5 years and Joseph Shade-Hubbard, 21, to 10 years in the Aug. 9, 2019 crime. Marquel Bazemore, 20, was sentenced on July 28 to 8 years.
Authorities say the trio ordered a Lyft through the app around 4 a.m. in the area of 8 Mile Road and I-75.
As the driver, who had a 2007 Cadillac Escalade, was dropping the men off at Mark Twain and Lyndon, Bazemore began punching him. Evans, who was in the front passenger seat, pulled out a gun and demanded everything the driver had, authorities said.
Bazemore and Shade-Hubbard rummaged through the driver's pockets and stole his his wallet, credit cards, and money. The men then drove off with the car that was later recovered at the home of one of the carjackers.
