If you go to a concert in downtown Detroit or retaurant, you might get the impression the pandemic is pretty much over. No masks. No social distancing. No real worries about Covid.

But fresh data is a reminder things are getting worse in Michigan, not better.

The state reported 8,058 new Covid-19 cases collectively for Thursday and Friday, an average of 4,029 per day. The two-day death toll was 79, with 42 earlier cases identified from vital records searches.

That daily average of Covid new cases is the highest since April 28, when the state reported 4,371.

The seven-day daily average is at 3,223 -- the first time since May it surpasses 3,000.

Bridge Michigan reports rates are rising in 59 of the state’s 83 counties, with the average statewide rate at 32 cases per day per 100,000 residents. Six counties are over 70 cases per day per 100,000, including Mackinac (83) and Ogemaw (82).

To date, the state has recorded 1,030,633 cases and 21,077 deaths. It also lists 917,827 infected people as recovered, as of Sept. 24. That's 89 percent of cases.
