Target Corp. reportedly plans to lease space for a modest-size store on the southeast corner of Woodward and Mack.

"That location ... has been rumored for several years as where Target was intending to put a store, although this marks the first time it has been publicly identified," Crain's Detroit Business reports from a Monday release.

The small-format outpost for the Minneapolis-based retail chain is expected to take 32,000 square feet.

... The store is to be the anchor retail tenant for a 350-unit apartment development planned by City Club Apartments. Plans for the apartments have been public since July 2020. ... There would be three apartment buildings with 186 below-grade parking spaces.

No construction timing projections are in a Monday announcement by the developer, the publication adds. The new store would be across Mack from a Whole Foods grocery that opened in 2013.

Target's big-box stores typically exceed 100,000 square feet, though it began introducing smaller urban formats in recent years --nincluding one in Boston that opened last October with just 11,000 square feet (above). "We plan to open approximately 30 of these stores every year for the next few years," says a 2020 statement from the Minneapolis-based retailer.

The proposed Midtown location would be smaller than the 42,000-square-foot Rivertown Market opened three weeks ago by Meijer on East Jefferson Avenue near downtown.

And it won't be the city's first Target. A bigger one was at the Bel Air Shopping Center on East 8 Mile in the Conner Creek area until 2003.
